Weston Hospital’s Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU) provides specialized care for patients with gastrointestinal disorders as well as those recovering from heart, liver, and kidney transplants, offering an advanced level of monitoring and treatment that exceeds routine care while remaining distinct from the intensity of critical care.As a Health Unit Coordinator (HUC)on the team, you will offer unparalleled customer service to patients,familiesand visitors to enhance the Cleveland Clinic experience. Using your administrative and clerical skills, you will ensure efficient operational flow of the department, allowing your fellow caregivers to continue providingoptimalpatient care.
A caregiver in this role works days from 7:00 a.m. – 7:30 p.m.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Provide general secretarial and clerical duties and other dutiessuch asplacing charts in proper order, stamping documents including EMS log with date and name of patient, gathering and organization of emergency patient data, preparing charts, collectingdataand completing general clerical duties.
Complete physician order process and order entry.
Answer call lights and follow up withappropriate caregivers.
Ensure proper closing of charts (e.g.charge sheets, Health Screening Assessment, narrative notes, etc.) and that completed charts go to the Data Coordinator on discharge.
Act as a receptionist and answer telephone, relay messages, place calls and interact with patients, families, visitors,staffand other departments in a professional manner.
Transcribe physician's orders accurately, alert nurses to new orders, single orders, and stat medications and confirm that a Registered Nurse signs all orders.
Receive and relay messages with accuracy from other departments(e.g.Lab, X-Ray, Admitting,etc.).
Confirm that lab requisitions for patients are completed and sent to Lab.
Answer patient call lights in a timely manner and follow up with appropriate nursing personnel with patient needs.
Assess and organize workload,determineorder ofimportanceand prioritize work.
Enter work orders incomputerforappropriate departmentsregardingmaintenance issues, biomedneedsand IT related problems.
Notify Environmental Services of rooms to be cleaned.
Ensure 100% compliance with patient ADT functions and computer status.
Complete a unit activity/time log for discharge,transferand admissions.
Complete Occurrence Report forms.
Contact Patient Concierge or address patients/family issues withappropriate departmenthead and act as a patient advocate to ensure proper patient comfort by alerting nursing caregivers of patients' needs (e.g., pain, anxiety, etc.).
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
HighSchoolDiploma or GED
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
One to two years of clerical experience
Experience with Microsoft office
Unit secretary experience
Physical Requirements:
Requires frequent walking from department to department; requires sitting at a workstation or desk; requires standing; work may include occasional pushing and/or pulling, lifting, and carrying objects weighing up to 50 lbs., such as files, documents and computer printouts.
Work requires finger dexterity and eye/hand coordination to operate a computer keyboard at a moderate skill level.
Mental Demands: Ability to work at a fast pace and prioritize multiple assignments/projects and respond to numerous requests; ability to resolve conflicts among staff and to work collaboratively with department directors, physicians and other members of the Healthcare team; ability to ensure operational efficiency; ability to problem-solve and make decisions; ability to exercise self-control and tolerate stress when dealing with multiple requests and/or conflicting demands from multiple customers.
Special Demands: Needs minimal sustained direction in assessing needs, directing staff and carrying out departmental and professional responsibilities.
Self-starting and self-motivating; working hours may exceed eight (8) hours per day and is based on what is needed to accomplish work at hand.
Personal Protective Equipment:
Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required for procedures.
