Job Description

Position Summary

The Extra Help Medical Technologist II will assist Pathology Laboratories Microbiology in preparation for College of American Pathologists (CAP) inspection and review Microbiology Laboratory standard operating procedures. The Extra Help Medical Technologist II will support the Microbiology laboratory meet regulatory and operational priorities and review compliance requirements.

Duties & Responsibilities

Assist in preparing the Microbiology Laboratory for College of American Pathologists (CAP) inspections, ensuring readiness of documentation, workflows, and quality practices.
Perform comprehensive reviews and updates of Microbiology Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure alignment with current regulatory standards and best practices.
Evaluate laboratory processes for compliance with CAP, CLIA, and other applicable regulatory requirements, identifying gaps and recommending corrective actions.
Support quality management initiatives by conducting internal audits, documentation reviews, and quality assurance activities.
Collaborate with laboratory leadership to prioritize operational and regulatory objectives, ensuring timely completion of compliance-related tasks.
Provide technical expertise in microbiology testing procedures, quality control, and laboratory standards to support staff and leadership.
Assist in the development and implementation of corrective and preventive action plans (CAPA) following audit findings or compliance concerns.
Maintain accurate and organized records, logs, and documentation required for regulatory inspections and internal quality reviews.
Ensure adherence to laboratory safety protocols, infection control policies, and biohazard handling procedures.
Support staff training and competency assessments related to updated SOPs, compliance requirements, and regulatory expectations.
Act as a resource to laboratory personnel regarding regulatory standards, inspection preparedness, and quality improvement initiatives.
Monitor and track progress of inspection readiness activities, providing status updates to leadership as needed.
Assist in maintaining a culture of continuous improvement, accountability, and regulatory excellence within the Microbiology laboratory.
Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications


High school graduation or equivalent.
Meets basic standards and qualifications for laboratory testing for general supervisory personnel under Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), Subpart M, Section 493.1461.

Preferred Qualifications

ASCP (or equivalent) certification as a Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist (MT/MLS).
3–5+ years of experience in a clinical microbiology laboratory, preferably in a hospital or reference lab setting.
Prior experience supporting CAP inspections, audits, or accreditation processes.
Demonstrated expertise in developing, reviewing, and revising laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Strong knowledge of CLIA, CAP, and other regulatory and compliance standards applicable to laboratory operations.
Previous experience in a lead, senior technologist, or supervisory role within a laboratory environment.
Proven ability to conduct quality assurance reviews, internal audits, and compliance gap analysis.
Familiarity with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and documentation management tools (MediaLab, etc).
Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.
Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work across multidisciplinary teams.
Experience in training, mentoring, or competency assessment of laboratory staff.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a regulatory-focused environment.
