Job Description

Summary

The Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery is seeking a motivated, detail-oriented Vascular Sonographer to support clinical operations within the Division of Vascular Surgery. This role is responsible for performing high-quality vascular ultrasound examinations, assisting physicians with diagnostic and interventional procedures, and ensuring exceptional patient care in a fast-paced academic clinical environment. The Vascular Sonographer works collaboratively with physicians, advanced practice providers, and clinical staff to support accurate diagnosis, treatment planning, and ongoing patient.


This position is located at our McNair Campus.

Job Duties

  • Performs vascular ultrasound examinations in accordance with established protocols and standards under the supervision of the Nurse Manager and Technical Director.
  • Operates ultrasound and vascular diagnostic equipment to produce high-quality, accurate diagnostic images.
  • Monitors examinations in real time by evaluating image quality, consistency, and accuracy; adjust equipment settings as needed.
  • Records, labels, and securely stores diagnostic images and data in PACS in accordance with institutional policies.
  • Prepares examination documentation and preliminary reports to support physician interpretation and patient care management.
  • Maintains a strong understanding of vascular anatomy, physiology, and disease processes to support accurate imaging and assessment.
  • Provides direct patient care throughout the examination process, ensuring patient safety, comfort, and effective communication.
  • Assists physicians with invasive and non-invasive procedures as needed, including providing real-time ultrasound guidance.
  • Manages a high-volume patient workload, including patients with complex or difficult pathology.
  • Maintains and performs routine quality checks on ultrasound equipment; ensure equipment readiness and functionality.
  • Orders and manages supplies to support daily laboratory operations.
  • Prepares for upcoming patient schedules, including reviewing orders and clarifying discrepancies with clinical staff or physicians.
  • Maintains accurate and complete medical records in compliance with regulatory and institutional requirements.
  • Participates in Quality Assurance initiatives and support IAC accreditation and re-accreditation processes.
  • Fulfills continuing education requirements and support the training and mentoring of students as applicable.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned to support clinical and departmental operations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate's degree from an accredited training program through an accredited institution.
  • No experience required.
  • Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or Registered Vascular Sonographer (RVS) with the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience performing comprehensive vascular ultrasound examinations, including arterial and venous duplex studies of the upper and lower extremities, carotid, aorta, renal, and mesenteric arteries, as well as physiologic vascular testing.
