Animal Care Technician I

Department: Comparative Medicine LARC
Location: Oklahoma City, OK
Position Overview and Responsibilities
OMRF is seeking an Animal Care Technician I to join the team. This position plays a critical role in supporting groundbreaking research by ensuring the health, well-being, and humane treatment of laboratory animals. Your attention to detail and commitment to animal welfare are the foundation that enables our scientists to conduct meaningful, ethical, and innovative research. This is more than just animal care; it's a vital contribution to scientific advancement and public health.
Responsibilities:
1. Performs basic animal care functions including daily health observations and cage changing.
2. Performs routine medical treatments under the direction of the supervisor and veterinarian.
3. Maintains a clean and safe working environment.
4. Cleans and sanitizes assigned areas of facility per department SOPs.
5. Maintains quality control records.
6. Performs, as directed, safety compliance and uses Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), as needed.
7. Assists with monitoring facility environment, and notifies supervisor of any problems detected.
8. Carries out all duties in compliance with standards of oversight bodies (AAALAC, PHS, etc.) and department SOPs.
9. Maintains positive working relationships as a team player through problem-solving issues, speaking positively about others, listening attentively and observing the confidentiality of research needs.
10. Performs all other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must have effective communication skills and good attention to detail.
  • Must have ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work independently as well as with others.
  • Display industriousness, conscientiousness and dependability.
  • The ability to be flexible and adjust to changing conditions/requirements is essential.

Physical Requirements
  • Regularly required to move throughout the animal lab facility.
  • Frequently lifts, carries, or moves items weighing up to 30 pounds.
  • Pushes, pulls, or moves items weighing up to 500 pounds with the assistance of carts or mechanical aids.
  • Occasionally required to ascend or descend stepladders or ladders; alternative means or assistance are available for those with mobility limitations.
  • Occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions; appropriate precautions and accommodations will be provided as needed.
  • Regularly exposed to animal dander, fecal material, and bedding; protective equipment and accommodations are available to mitigate allergen exposure.
  • There is a potential risk of animal bites and scratches; comprehensive safety training and protective measures are provided to reduce risk.
  • The noise level in the work environment is typically moderate; hearing protection will be provided when necessary.

These physical requirements constitute essential functions of the position, to be performed either with or without reasonable accommodations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prefer one (1) year of animal care experience in an animal lab environment, farm setting, veterinary clinic, or other related education or experience.
  • Experience working in fast-paced environment requiring attention to detail.

Work Hours
Typically, Monday through Friday from 7:00AM to 3:30PM with rotating weekends and holidays. Typically one weekend per month and two holidays/year.
