Job Description

The Engineering Student Support & Wellness Coordinator is responsible for coordinating holistic support services for students within the School of Engineering. This includes conducting intake assessments, facilitating access to on and off-campus resources, and managing ongoing care for students in need. The coordinator serves as a vital link between students, academic programs, and campus partners to promote student wellbeing and success. Additionally, the role involves outreach and education efforts to enhance awareness of available support services and foster a supportive campus community.


About the Work Unit:
The Office of Student Success (OSS) supports and fosters a community where students have opportunities to explore their interests and network. OSS supports engineering students through a number of different programs such as STEM Tutoring, Clark Scholars, Supporting Women in Engineering Leadership (SWEL), Fall Early Start Transition Program (FEST), V2 Connect, and TLSAMP. The OSS team also serves as the engineering school's liaison for campus partners like the Global Education Office and the Career Center. Additionally, OSS is the supervising department for engineering student organizations and includes the Wellness Coordinator, who plays a crucial role in coordinating holistic support services for students.


Key Functions and Expected Performance:
Holistic Student Support (70%):
• Complete intake and assessment with undergraduate during both scheduled appointments and drop-in hours to fully understand their needs and concerns and develop Student Success Plans with students to encourage realistic goals and identify potential support resources.
• Provide appropriate ongoing follow up with students in person and/or by phone/email for continuity of care and accountability and to evaluate successes, barriers, and/or gaps in support.
• Meet individually with students of concern to coordinate and provide ongoing care management in an effort to ensure appropriate services are in place.
• Be knowledgeable about and connect students with appropriate support services on and off-campus to help students effectively navigate the Student Care Network.
• Work closely with campus partners to facilitate coordinated and holistic support measures for students.
• Build relationships with and maintain a network of community providers and resources that meet the needs (medical, financial, and otherwise) of the student population so that off-campus referrals can be made intentionally and successfully.
• Provide services to a diverse campus community to support campus and individual mental health, wellness, and skill development.
• At appropriate intervals throughout the semester, leads efforts to identify students who receive academic actions (i.e. midterm deficiencies, dismissals, probation, etc.), outreach to students to offer support, maintain updated documentation in student files, and notify appropriate campus partners.
• Monitor incoming Student Care Coordination intake forms for acute concerns, facilitate immediate outreach to assess safety, if necessary, and triage to CARE support team care coordinator for follow up.
• Meet individually with students of concern or who may have acute needs (and their families, if necessary) to coordinate and provide immediate service/resource connection.
• Be knowledgeable about and connect students with appropriate support services on and off- campus to help students effectively navigate the Student Care Network.
• Respond to after hours or weekend emergencies on a limited basis to ensure continuous support for students.


Outreach and Development (15%):
• Build relationships with campus partners and act as a resource on matters pertaining to student wellbeing and students of concern to promote holistic support for students and further the mission and strategic priorities of SCC and Student Affairs.
• Assist in the design of programs and facilitate trainings to educate students, faculty, and staff about the student wellbeing, Student Care Network, other campus partners, and on topics such as identifying and responding to students in distress.
• Engage in professional development to remain abreast of trends in higher education, student mental health, substance use, and wellbeing to ensure our practices are both relevant and evidenced-based.
• Assumes other responsibilities as directed by the Associate Dean of Student Success


Administrative Functions (15%):
• Scheduling of all Assessment appointments.
• Working collaboratively on academic calendar demands that affect students
• Helping curate database of students in distress for the School of Engineering and communicate regularly with relevant school officials
• Obtaining authorization to release and obtain client information and/or medical/psychotherapy/educational records.
• Maintain appropriate and timely documentation for recordkeeping and communication with other service providers based on ethical and legal standards and requirements to enhance care for students.
• Learn and comply with financial policies and procedures related to travel, procurement, and expense reporting in order to be a good steward of university funds.
•Participate in school-wide events (Academic Day, Transfer Orientation, etc.), as needed, to support colleagues and ensure these events run smoothly.
• Serve on divisional committees and working groups to enrich the experience and resources available to staff across the division.
• Maintain an understanding of institutional and departmental financial policies related to areas such as travel, procurement, expense, and time reporting to ensure compliance and proper stewardship of university resources.
• Demonstrate a willingness to support colleagues across the division in order to encourage the implementation or fulfillment of divisional goals and strategic priorities.


Additional duties supporting the strategic educational mission of the School of Engineering and missions of the Office of Student Success as assigned.


Supervisory Relationships:
This position does not have supervisory responsibility; this position reports to the Associate Dean for Student Success.


Education and Certifications:
• A Bachelor’s degree is necessary.
• A Master’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, or related mental health field is preferred.
• Possession of, or eligibility to obtain, an appropriate license (i.e., LMSW, LCSW, NCC, LPC, LMFT) or case management certification is strongly preferred.


Experience and Skills:
• Three years of experience or the equivalent is necessary.
• Knowledge of care management, intake/assessment and brief counseling techniques is preferred.
• Experience working with students in crisis and creating behavioral intervention plans and/or care coordination is preferred.
• Ability to work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds attending highly selective institutions with a broad range of campus groups, departments, and organizations is preferred.
