Job Description
As the Design Basis Threat (DBT) Security Analyst, your key responsibilities will include analyzing security risks to Argonne assets as per the DOE Design Basis Threat (DBT) Order and other associated Argonne requirements. You will serve as the hazardous materials subject matter expert for Security with a focus on risk assessment, risk reduction, and screening of hazardous materials such as chemical, radiological, and biological substances. Additionally, you will be responsible for performing hazardous material release impact assessments and security risk assessments, providing guidance and recommendations on physical security effectiveness, and supporting the site Security and Emergency Services directorate in mitigating, responding to, and recovering from security incidents. This position may have remote work opportunities. This role also entails participating as a member of the Laboratory’s Emergency Management Team on a rotational basis, which may include working extended hours, nights, weekends, and holidays.
Position Requirements
- Relevant experience in one or more of the following areas: Assessment of security risks, emergency management, hazardous materials emergency response, hazardous materials consequence assessment, environmental science, chemistry, biology, mathematics, atmospheric science, industrial risk management, industrial hygiene, health physics, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- An understanding of the basic chemical and physical properties of hazardous materials (chemical and radiological).
- Familiarity with Chemical Inventory Systems or other database management systems.
- Proven ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing with a vast array of individuals across all levels of management at the Laboratory.
- The ability to work collaboratively with people in a wide variety of job classifications at all levels of an organization. Proven ability to effectively cultivate and foster strong working relationships with team members, laboratory personnel, management, and external contacts.
- Ability to interpret and implement policies and procedures as well as to produce professional technical reports, plans, briefs, and other written documents.
- The ability to multi-task and work independently in a fast-paced environment to produce results involving competing priorities and deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to provide technical guidance and direction under emergency conditions and in achieving goals and objectives.
- Proficient with the use of personal computers and Windows applications (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Access, etc.).
- Demonstrated strong research and writing skills in producing written reports and other materials commensurate with that of a bachelor’s degree in STEM studies.
- To perform the essential functions of this position successful applicants must provide proof of U.S. citizenship, which is required to comply with federal regulations and contract. Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level security clearance.

Preferred:
- A working knowledge of DOE requirements, in particular, DOE O 470.3C, DESIGN BASIS THREAT (DBT) and DOE O 470.4B, SAFEGUARDS AND SECURITY PROGRAM.
- Experience conducting hazardous materials consequence assessments and/or environmental risk assessments.
- Experience with hazardous materials classification systems, e.g. GHS, NFPA 704, etc.
- Experience running hazardous materials atmospheric plume models (e.g. Aloha, EPICode, Hotspot)
- Experience with hazardous materials research databases and other sources of chemical, physical, and health properties of hazardous materials.
- Experience in hazardous materials emergency response and/or management.
- Knowledge of physical security systems and practices.
- Demonstrated strong research and writing skills in producing written reports and other materials commensurate with that of a master’s degree.
This position is to be hired at the below level and the requirements are as follows:
- PT3 - Bachelor’s degree + 4 years of experience, or equivalent.
