Summary

The Department of Pathology at Texas Children's Hospital (TCH) is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Instructor - Pathologists' Assistant for its Division of Anatomic Pathology. Located in the nation's fourth largest city, TCH is the nation's largest children's hospital and has recently completed expansion of the Legacy Tower, a 640,000 square foot acute care tower with six additional operating rooms. In addition to robust pediatric and neonatal services, TCH also offers programs in high-risk obstetrics and gynecology, fetal medicine, and fetal surgery at the Pavilion for Women as well as adult congenital heart surgery.

We are seeking an additional Pathologists' Assistant to join the Department of Pathology at the rank of Faculty Instructor in the clinical, academic, and research missions at Texas Children's Hospital and Texas Children's Hospital Pavilion for Women. The candidate will hold the rank of Faculty Instructor through Baylor College of Medicine with TCH being their place of operation. The combined annual surgical cases approximate 28,000 specimens from pediatric and gynecologic surgeries and obstetric deliveries with approximately 150 autopsies annually. Expected duties include gross description and dissection of surgical and placental specimens with selection of tissues for histopathologic examination and ancillary studies. Skilled gross photography and performance of special techniques, such as renal biopsy adequacy and fine needle aspiration support are strongly desired. The applicant is expected to perform post-mortem examinations which span all developmental stages (fetal to adulthood). As a member of our academic mission, the successful candidate will actively supervise pathology residents and pediatric pathology fellows in surgical grossing and post-mortem examinations. Additional administrative duties include maintenance of gross and autopsy protocols, maintenance of workspace equipment and supplies, participation in laboratory and professional quality assurance, laboratory accreditation inspections, tissue bank management and digital dictation/voice recognition.

Minimum Qualifications

In addition to adhering to the policies set forth by TCH and Baylor College of Medicine, the person must understand and act on the need for discretion. This person will report directly to the Medical Director of AP Laboratories.

Interested individuals must possess a bachelor’s degree from a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) approved Pathologists' Assistant program and certification as a Pathologists’ Assistant by the American Association of Pathologists' Assistants or American Society of Clinical Pathologists. Six months of directly related experience is ideal.
