What Your Job Will Be Like:

The Air Delivered Weapons Systems Tester Development Department (7256) and the Ballistic Missile Tester Development Department (7255) have an immediate opening for a passionate and motivated R&D Mechanical Engineer to join an exciting, dynamic, and highly technical team. The selected candidate will be a member of a diverse team that designs, fabricates, qualifies, and deploys complex system-level nuclear weapon testers for the Stockpile Surveillance Program.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Design and implement test bed assemblies that will experience centrifuge and shaker table test environments.
  • Design, analyze, and test explosive containment assemblies (boom boxes).
  • Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team of design engineers, systems engineers, and to successfully implement mission critical designs.
  • Develop and implement innovative solutions to solve technically complex challenges.
  • Participate in the clarification / refinement of system or subsystem level requirements for testers.
  • Develop and incorporate new design tools and approaches.
  • Be called upon to peer review other design efforts and concepts within the Labs.
  • Troubleshoot test equipment that may be based on legacy or the latest pioneering technologies.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant will be required to work onsite in Albuquerque, NM. Some travel may be required for this position.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related STEM field, plus one (1) year of experience; OR Bachelor’s degree in stated field, plus five (5) years of experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in above-stated field.
  • Experience in leading or participating in high performance teams.
  • Solid modeling experience (Creo preferred).
  • Experience in the design, development, and qualification of complex test beds.
  • Experience in requirements analysis, qualification plan development, and supporting large scale testing of complex systems.
  • Experience and/or formal education in the design, development and qualification of mechanical systems and components.
  • Experience with component failure analysis (FMEA, Fishbone, etc.).
  • Working knowledge of generating build to print design definition drawings.
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to team across multiple subject areas.

About Our Team:

We are the premier test equipment engineering capability for the Stockpile Surveillance Program. We design, develop, and sustain qualified test systems used to evaluate the safety, security, and effectiveness of the nuclear weapon stockpile. These departments provide an opportunity to learn about the U.S. Nuclear Security Enterprise, nuclear weapon design and function, and the role of Sandia National Laboratories in the nation’s nuclear deterrence mission.

Position Information:

This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.

Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
