Summary

The Research Assistant I will coordinate receipt of samples and utilize molecular biology techniques to process samples.  Additionally, they will assist with routine laboratory operations, such as upholding a clean environment, maintaining equipment, and ordering supplies. Lastly, the candidate will adhere to all patient privacy, government, university, and hospital policies, rules, regulations, and codes to maintain licensure and/or accreditation.

Texas Children’s Hospital is embarking on the creation of a large pediatric biobank, in which patient samples are banked for future multi-omic studies. We are currently seeking a Research Assistant I to conduct activities to support the Biobank under direction of the Lab Director and senior staff.  This is a wonderful opportunity to join a growing team and to set a standard of excellence.  The ideal candidate is highly motivated and organized with excellent troubleshooting skills and experience in molecular biology techniques.

Job Duties

  • Coordinates receipt of samples and accessions according to the Biobank’s standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Performs DNA extraction on blood samples.
  • Establishes new protocols and workflows when new sample types and/or technologies are introduced.
  • Carefully maintains detailed records, prepares reports, and presents findings.
  • Upholds a clean work area to ensure a safe and efficient work environment.
  • Orders laboratory supplies and equipment.
  • Adheres to IRB-approved protocols and complies with HIPAA in handling of confidential materials.
  • Complies with all government, university, and hospital policies, rules, regulations, and codes.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a Basic Science or a related field.
  • Two years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in basic science or a related field.
  • Experience performing DNA extraction and/or PCR.
  • Experience operating liquid handlers and automated equipment.
  • Familiarity with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
  • Proficient in use of the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Superior attention to detail and highly organized.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions.
