Under the direct supervision of the Supervisor, Radiation Oncology and the Radiation Oncologist, the Radiation Oncology Nurse Specialist is responsible for:   
• Participation in direct patient care and assessment.
• Promotion of patient, family, and staff education.
• Contribution to overall performance in the Radiation Oncology Department.
• Acting as a liaison between the Department of Radiation Oncology and Department of Nursing.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with Radiation Oncologist, referring physicians and staff members to provide optimal care of patients and families
  • Obtains a history related to the patients chief complaint and assesses the health status of patients scheduled to undergo Radiation Oncology treatments.
  • Notifies the responsible Radiation Oncologist and/or Radiation Therapist about findings and concerns needing attention prior to, during, and following treatment.
  • Documents patient care, effectiveness of interventions/treatments.
  • Delivers direct care to patients as established in the patients plan of care according to established policies, procedures and standards of care.
  • Prepares patients and assists physicians with examination, procedures and other processes related to direct patient care.
  • Administers medications to patients according to established standards of care, policies, and procedures. Accurately charts.
  • Starts, discontinues and monitors IV lines in accordance with hospital policy/procedure.
  • Complies with all Radiation Oncology System (IMPAC) entry requirements for accurate patient charting, charges and tracking monitors as appropriate.
  • Initiates new programs for patient care and patient/family education. Reinforces patient and family teaching.
  • Aids in the design and development of department administrative and operational policies and procedures, safety rules, environmental requirements, infection control standards and regulatory agency requirements. Works on clinical education projects.
  • Coordinates other departments involved in the treatment of a patient. (e.g., anesthesiology and a nurse at Akron Childrens Hospital).
  • Establishes good rapport with patients, families, visitors, physicians and staff, indicative of customer service philosophy.
  • Provides conscious sedation and monitoring to patients undergoing radiation treatment or procedure as specified by the hospital conscious sedation policy and procedure.
  • Continually works to anticipate and exceed the needs and expectations of customers.
  • Follows hospital and department policies and procedures with special attention to attendance and punctuality, confidentiality, dress code and display of ID badge, and safety.
  • Completes mandatory education and training in order to maintain organization and department/job specific competencies and requirements. Maintains applicable certification/licensure. Advances own professional development through self-directed learning. Maintains current CPR certification and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
  • Other duties as assigned


Education:

  • BSN preferred.


Certifications:

  • Registered Nurse with current license to practice in the State of Ohio. Current CPR certification, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred.


Complexity of Work:

  • Maintains competencies specific to patient population served.
  • Knowledge of basic cardiac arrhythmia recognition when ECG monitoring is utilized. Strong organizational and communications skills.
