Job Description

The Pulmonary Function Technologist will be responsible for performing pulmonary function testing and arterial blood gases. Additional responsibilities are required, such as maintaining test equipment and blood gas equipment, communicating with the pulmonary team, ordering supplies, and completing daily clerical tasks. They will serve as an ambassador for the department as well as the Center by demonstrating exceptional customer service skills.

 

Minimum education required:

High School Diploma/ GED

 

Licensure required:

BLS certification 

RRT/CRT or Clinical Lab Technician with Blood Gas Specialty

 

Minimum Required: 
One year's experience performing full pulmonary function tests and arterial blood gases.

 

Essential Functions:

Maintains pulmonary function testing and blood gas analysis equipment.

Monitors scheduling template regularly. Reviews orders for completeness. Contacts the appropriate staff member/ provider for any PFT orders and/or clarifications. Uploads PFT’s into Sentry Suite for pulmonary interpretation. Completes associated task on task list, completing the order. Accurately completes the PFT charge ticket.

 

Identifies critical blood gas results promptly and notifies the appropriate pulmonary team member per policy.
Documents required information of critical results. Communicates relevant information pertaining to pulmonary
function studies when indicated. Notifies pulmonary team when urgent interpretation is requested. Communicates
any changes in policy or ATS recommendations to pulmonary team.

 

First line to troubleshoot any pulmonary function equipment issues. Contacts appropriate respiratory staff member
for blood gas equipment issues. Removes any pulmonary function or arterial blood gas equipment from service if
unable to troubleshoot. Notifies manager and BioMed or IT, depending on the issue. Cleans and disinfects
equipment between every patient AND when soiled. Performs and monitors equipment calibrations. Performs
quality control on the equipment according to the ATS guidelines.
