Job Description

Monitors and cares for the health and well-being of animals housed in the Biological Resources Unit (BRU).
Responsibilities:
  • Follows accepted practices and written standard operating procedures in all interactions with laboratory animals. 
  • Uses accepted practices to establish and implement procedures for animal care, housing, husbandry, and maintenance programs. 
  • May engage in specific administrative functions to assist investigators in the daily operation of the research laboratory.   
  • Performs various procedures on animals including, but not limited to, surgical anesthesia induction and monitoring, pre-operative procedures, postoperative procedures and monitoring, medication administration and others 
  • Performs minor surgical procedures, injections (IP, IV (tail vein injection), SC) and other procedures without direct supervision. 
  • Maintains appropriate animal records including daily records, examination records, surgical anesthesia records, and post-operative records. 
  • May perform collection and preparation of animal tissues and fluids for study, eg tumor extraction, blood collection, spleen, lung, liver, etc
  • Perform breeding, weaning and genotyping (transgenic mice etc)
  • Prepare reports and maintain inventory of animals, cages and genotypes
  • Performs daily health observations and monitors the condition of research animals.
  • Administers medical treatments to animals as prescribed.
  • Assists investigators by performing special techniques or procedures.
  • Provides custodial care, fresh feed, and fresh water to animals according to the standard operating procedures.
  • Ensures that areas used for technical procedures are well maintained and adequately supplied.
  • Transports supplies, equipment, and animals to and from various locations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must be willing to be trained to properly handle all species of animals housed within the BRU.

Certifications:

  • Assist Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT), Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT), or Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) certifications from American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) are preferred.

Complexity of Work:

  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
  • Must be flexible and complete the job before leaving work. Animal care is a 7-day per week, 365-days per year job.

Work Experience:

  • Minimum of one year of experience, AALAS certification or demonstrated equivalent experience in the custodial care of animals.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and transport supplies, equipment, and/or animals weighing up to 75 pounds; frequent standing, bending and walking; must be able to tolerate unpleasant odors, sights, animal bites and scratches.
  • May be required to work with biological, chemical, and radiation hazards after proper training.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
