Job Description
Monitors and cares for the health and well-being of animals housed in the Biological Resources Unit (BRU).
Responsibilities:
- Performs daily health observations and monitors the condition of research animals.
- Provides custodial care, fresh feed, and fresh water to animals according to the standard operating procedures.
- Receives animal shipments and completes required documentation.
- Maintains and adequately supplies the areas used for technical procedures.
- Transports supplies, equipment and animals to and from various locations.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education:
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Must be willing to be trained to properly handle all species of animals housed within the BRU.
Certifications:
- None required.
Complexity of Work:
- Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
- Must be flexible and complete the job before leaving work.
- Animal care is a 7-day per week, 365-days per year job.
Work Experience:
- Experience in the custodial care of animals preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and transport supplies, equipment, and/or animals weighing over 50 pounds; frequent standing, bending and walking; must be able to tolerate unpleasant odors, sights, animal bites and scratches.
- May be required to work with biological, chemical, and radiation hazards after proper training.
Personal Protective Equipment:
- Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
