The Sustainable Northern Australia (SNA) Team under CSIRO Environment line of business works on a range of large multi-institutional projects across Northern Australia which have a major impact on policy and on-ground delivery in that region.

As an Applied Northern Australia Regional Development Economist in this role you’ll provide economic advice into a range of projects related to integrated water, agricultural, energy and resource assessment and contribute to the regional development of land use conservation and optimisation.

This role will provide an opportunity to work in multidisciplinary teams, utilising cutting edge technologies, to help solve some of Australia’s greatest challenge’s. Your duties will include:

  • Assisting in the planning and preparation of research proposals and carrying out research investigations, requiring originality, creativity and innovation.
  • Selecting the most profitable line of attack upon a problem and preparing detailed design proposals and experimental protocols.
  • Recognising opportunities across multiple disciplines to generate and pursuing new ideas/ approaches and networking with scientific colleagues.
  • Participating in the identification of further opportunities which arise from research and initiating new lines of research.
  • Addressing problems in a constructive manner and preparing reports for clients and/or writing scientific papers for publication. 
  • Undertake experimental and/or observational research activities and supervise/train others to ensure experiments are established in accordance with the research design.

 

Location: Townsville or Darwin is preferred; other locations can be considered

Salary: * AU105k – AU142k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

Tenure: Indefinite / Full-time

* This pay range is inclusive of both CSOF5 and CSOF6 pay levels and applications are invited across two capability levels. The successful candidate will be appointed at a level that is commensurate with their skills and experience - see the position description for further details.

To be considered you will need:

  • Prior northern Australia domain knowledge in land- and water-based developments, such as grazing, cropping, irrigation, water management, and water planning.
  • Previous applied economics experience (including benefit-cost analysis) in the above systems and the development of gross margins and understanding and knowledge of methods for undertaking regional economic assessments.
  • Prior knowledge of and experience in common agricultural modelling software (e.g. APSIM, GRASP, CLEM).
  • Demonstrated experience with databases and statistical analysis, and the associated workflows required to link field data through to databases and automated statistical analysis.
  • Ability and experience using data from a range of disciplines to integrate into common platforms (e.g. to assist with the evaluation of multiple environmental benefits).
