Harvard Medical School is a world-renowned Medical and Life Sciences research and teaching organization that enables collaboration of HMS faculty, researchers, and practitioners from the Longwood Medical Area (LMA) affiliated Hospitals, and prominent researchers around the world to advance medicine and science. The Applications Engineer is a member of the Enterprise Services team reporting to the Associate Director of Enterprise Services, and is responsible for supporting, planning, and developing strategies for enterprise-level applications and systems at Harvard Medical School.  
 

The Applications Engineer is responsible for planning, executing, and supporting complex Application projects across Harvard Medical School as well as operational support for existing services and applications supported by the Enterprise Services team. The Applications Engineer will maintain extensive technical knowledge of various enterprise-level applications residing on both Windows and Linux platforms. The position requires a background in Microsoft Operating systems, Linux, VMware, O365, Exchange, SharePoint, IIS, and Active directory with a strong understanding of Active directory user attributes. Candidates must also possess experience in various cloud vendor platforms as well as scripting languages (PowerShell, Perl, Python, PHP, etc.) and their use in automating configuration management for operational tasks. In addition, this position will explore new technology solutions in conjunction with academic departments, research departments, business units, and infrastructure teams.


Core duties and responsibilities:

  • Configure or modify software to perform optimally and securely in the Harvard Medical School technical environment.
  • Manage user data flow and troubleshoot user data issues between multiple systems and databases.
  • Write technical specifications to guide the selection of new software applications or modifications to existing applications.
  • Participate in Harvard Medical School development of strategy, processes, skills, and operational practices for the support of cloud-based software.
  • Serve as an adviser for Change Management; provide guidance on the interactions of software applications and the Harvard Medical School technical environment.
  • Participate in ITSM-based processes such as Change Management, Configuration Management, and Incident and Problem management.
  • Formulate processes for software testing and quality assurance.
  • Participate in disaster recovery planning, testing, and operations.
  • Support incident and problem management by providing Tier 3 support for infrastructure functionality and performance issues for software.
  • Coordinate with Harvard Medical School Information Technology departments responsible for Enterprise Systems, Academic, Research Computing, and Information Security.
  • Participate in 24/7 on-call rotation
  • Other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications
  • Minimum of five years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience
Working Conditions
  • Occasionally required to work outside of normal business hours, and may be called during off hours
Additional Qualifications and Skills
  •  
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Project management experience.
  • Knowledge of Active Directory user attributes.
  • Ability to understand user attribute data flow and assist in troubleshooting user data issues
  • Demonstrated experience managing Enterprise level applications and deployments.
  • Significant experience with VMware, Microsoft Exchange, Office 365, SharePoint, IIS and ADFS and Active Directory.
  • Experience with Splunk.
  • Experience with cloud vendors such as AWS, Azure and Google.
  • Strong experience in various scripting languages (Perl, PowerShell, Python, PHP, etc.) and their use in automating configuration management for operational tasks.
  • Knowledge of operating systems (Windows 2008-2019, Red Hat Linux, AIX).
  • Experience with the .NET and Java Application Server platforms.
  • Experience with performance tuning, and strong troubleshooting skills.
  • The successful candidate will be highly organized and able to prioritize work and flexible in job tasks.
  • Must have the ability to handle day-to-day operations while responding to calls and emails and Service Now tickets.
  • Ability to work individually, within a team, and with other groups; strong written and verbal communication skills; a commitment to customer service; ability to work in a demanding, fast-paced environment; record of keeping abreast of industry trends and changes in technologies; a concern for accuracy, details, and quality; strong interpersonal skills; proven analytical and problem-solving abilities; highly self-motivated and self-directed.
Additional Information
This position is based in Boston and some in-person on-campus work will be required, and flexible/remote work is an option. Any remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA*, CT, GA, IL, MA, MD, ME, NH, NJ, NY, RI, VA, VT, and WA). Individual flexible and remote work options for this role will be discussed during the interview process. *Note: Harvard employees working in California must be exempt.
