Job Description

Job-Specific Responsibilities

This position is for a computational scientist to run a data core unit that will support the efforts of an NIH U19 project focused on the relationship neural activity and behavior. We are seeking a software engineer to work at the intersection of neurobiology and data science on a large-scale project to understand the role of dopamine in animal cognition and emotion. The role will involve working closely with neuroscience labs around the country to build pipelines for data sharing, establish common processing standards and data/metadata storage formats, and create a unified data access portal. The resulting platform will be a critical access point for neuroscience researchers around the world, and will contribute to a growing movement in the sciences toward data sharing and collaboration.
Responsibilities will include: Working closely with labs around the country to collate information on experimental protocols, analysis pipelines and experimental data in a central database; Developing or adapting data/metadata standards to allow unified storage and access for protocols, pipelines and data; Creating a web-based portal for easy access to protocols, pipelines and data; Producing documentation and common standards that allow for continual expansion of the database, including the addition of more data/experiments or the inclusion of additional labs. The computer scientist will work effectively within a culture inclusive of individuals with diverse backgrounds, styles, abilities, and motivations, and appreciate and leverage the capabilities, insights, and ideas of all individuals.

Typical Core Duties

Oversee aspects of data management services which may include data modeling and database and analytics platform design, database performance and optimization, recovery/load strategy and implementation, and data modeling
Lead team in development and enhancements of the data user interface including data acquisition/access analysis
Monitor status of assignments; review code and document scripts and procedures
Design and implement data verification and testing methods
Identify and evaluate opportunities to improve existing subject areas and applications and determine viability for adoption
Provide technical expertise and direction in developing and supporting system level programs
Identify areas for efficiency or improvement; recommend improvements
Create new standards and procedures related to end user and interface development, including user requirements
Partner with others on technical issues and system architecture definition
May manage vendor relationships
Provide training to clients and staff
Function as subject matter expert or project lead; advise unit/school
Abide by and follow the Harvard University IT technical standards, policies, and Code of Conduct

Basic Qualifications

Minimum of seven years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

Proficiency in Python, MATLAB, and javascript. Experience using version control (git) and data visualization libraries such as Jupyter, matplotlib, ggplot2, bokeh, seaborn, scikit or another equivalent. Engineering background in a technical discipline such as computer science, statistics, math or data science is preferred. Experience building GUI-based front ends for intuitive data exploration. Familiarity with Neurobiology data processing tools (preferred), excellent communication skills (will be working as part of a consortium of several labs), mathematical background (preferred), familiarity with generalized linear models (GLM), and team-based project management.

Bachelor’s in computer science, neuroscience, or a related field. At least one year of experience in data analysis or software development in a research or industry role. A Master’s degree may count towards experience.

Completion of Harvard IT Academy specified foundational courses (or external equivalent) preferred

This is a 12-month term appointment with the possibility of renewal contingent on funding.
