Job DescriptionJob-Specific Responsibilities
We are seeking a motivated, well-organized, and committed Research Assistant to support the Leger-Abraham laboratory in the Department of Microbiology at Harvard Medical School (https://leger-abraham-laboratory.com/). Our group investigates the protein synthesis machinery of parasites, such as the ones causing Leishmaniasis and Malaria, that significantly burden public health. Our long-term goal is to harness this information to develop safe and effective antiparasitic drugs.
Under specific direction, the successful candidate will support a project on genome editing/structural biology of translation initiation factors in human parasites Leishmania. The project involves methods in biochemistry, parasitology, molecular biology and structural biology.
Responsibilities will include:
• Molecular cloning• CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing
• Large-scale protein expression in E. coli and insect cells
• Protein purification• Crystallization trials of protein complexes
Initially, the candidate will be responsible for assisting current lab members with their projects and will also be responsible for helping with general lab tasks and maintenance. As the successful candidate demonstrates proficiency and efficiency in the lab, opportunities to work more independently will be available and encouraged.
College background or equivalent work experience, preferably in a related discipline. One year related work experience (relevant course work may count towards experience).
Additional Qualifications and Skills
Appropriate communications skills required. Demonstrated abilities in basic laboratory techniques helpful, but not required. Exposure to applicable computer technologies, including specific software applications, may be required.
this is a two-year term position from date of hire, with possibility of extension, contingent on work performance and continued funding to support the position.
